If you’re a woman reading this, you will be very familiar with the following scenario. You’re in a meeting; everyone is making suggestions, giving their input, you bring up an idea, it may be one you’ve been mulling over, it may be a great or not so great suggestion. No reaction. But look what happens next.
A male colleague leans forward and repeats the same suggestion, and he gets a pat on the back, ‘what a great idea’ response.
For the many women who know what it’s like to have their opinions and suggestions ignored, only for a man to repeat the exact thing and everyone thinks he’s a genius, there is now a word to describe what he just did.
Until now the English language didn’t have a term to specifically explain this development of events.
But thanks to astronomer Nicole Gugliucci and her friends we now have a word for it. The term ‘hepeated’ came up during a Twitter conversation between Nicole and her friends.
My friends coined a word: hepeated. For when a woman suggests an idea and it’s ignored, but then a guy says same thing and everyone loves it
