The Six Word Mum: Laura Wood

Six-Word-Mum

This week The M Word introduces Laura Wood to our readers. Laura loves to write and has lots to say but little time to share. Writing for the M Word is giving her that platform to spit it all out! A morning host on her local radio station, and a voice over artist. Laura is a local celebrity. Yes we have television royalty in our ranks. You might recognise Laura from ‘Goggle Box’, where she is one of the  Telly watchers.

Laura travelled and lived the bohemian life style until a husband and three children put a stop to her gallivanting.

Not a fan of the word ‘moist’ yes ‘moist’! Laura would love the super power to ban this word from the English literary world.

Laura was worried when she was asked to write for The M Word, worried she would not have enough material. She was wrong. ‘When a bus trip to the chemist ends in me stripping to my underwear’ when this happened Laura realised she would never be short if something to write about. She has been bitten by the writing bug.

Describe Motherhood in six words?

Challenging, rewarding, relentless , eye-opening, miraculous and washing.

What inspires your writing?

My parents breaking up when I was fifteen inspired me to start writing disturbing poetry which gave me no end of relief. My travels over the years, a slightly wayward lifestyle and subsequently a husband, three children and much less frequently wayward lifestyle later…I’ve taken it back up again with the M Word. I’ve too much to say and too little time to say it but I’m safe in the knowledge that it’s something I adore doing.

What’s your story?

Mum of three under seven, frustrated genius, still clinging on to the coat-tails of youth and will continue to do so for as long as possible. I combine motherhood with presenting a breakfast show on local radio and being a voiceover artist. I’m also a telly watcher on Googlebox Ireland.

Whose writing do you admire and why?

I used to love reading books but do so rarely these days. I’m very out of touch with many current authors but used to love everyone from Joseph O’Connor to Marian Keyes. These days my main reading material is the very entertaining/thought provoking blogs from my fellow writers on The M Word (bonus points please)

If you had a super power for just one day only what would it be and what would you do with it?

I’d choose healing and if that’s not counted as a superpower I’d choose the power to remove the word ‘moist’ from the English language.

Which story are you most proud of and what inspired you to write it?

I’m proudest of my first story which was ‘When a bus trip to the chemist ends in me stripping to my underwear’ because it was then that I was bitten by the writing bug. After being asked to try some writing, I was worried that although parenting is relentless that I may not have enough material …that was the day that happened. It also makes me smile every time I think of it.
