Bróna from Snap Happy Mammy Here. Pinch me! Was this weekend real?
I have been given the opportunity to review the four-star Hillgrove hotel as part of the M Word Real Reviews series.
Bed, breakfast, evening meal and two spa treatments were kindly gifted to me. The review is my own honest review, there has been no input from the hotel. We had a lovely stay from beginning to end. Everything was top class!
The hotel is easily accessible from the M1. It took us about an hour and a half drive from Dublin, which was perfect amount of time with a toddler. We didn’t venture into Monaghan town as were too busy enjoying the hotel facilities. However, the town is in walking distance.
For the kids:
On arrival, my son Oisín was given a kiddie’s goodie bag which contained stickers, colouring activities and sweets. He had an absolute ball in this hotel as there are so many kid’s activities on site. There is a brilliant outdoor playground, a playroom with a ball pit, kitchen and lots of toys for the younger kids. There is also a games room with snooker, bowling, video games and play-stations for the older kids.
There is a kid’s club with scheduled activities which vary from penalty shootouts, to the big movie on Saturday nights. Children under 4 must be accompanied by an adult.
Once you are resident in the hotel you have access to the leisure centre and swimming pool. Whilst Oisín napped my husband and I managed to have a dip in the outdoor hot tub. When Oisín woke we had great fun splashing in the baby pool. There is a family changing room, a travel cot, and a tv with cartoons which made changing a bit of an easier task!
When we arrived, we decided to grab a bite to eat. We had some tasty soup and sandwiches in the bar which were really good value. We decided to feed Oisín before we had our dinner and ordered him a kid’s meal. He was so hungry from all the activities he ate every bit!
We settled Oisín to sleep in the room and once he was asleep transferred him into his stroller. We had a four-course meal in the The Vettriano Restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious and the service from our waitress, Tara was excellent. There was music on in the lounge but as Oisín was sleeping soundly we took advantage of a quiet corner in the reception and had a couple of drinks.
For breakfast my husband Darren had a tasty fry, Oisín had a treat of a waffle and I had fresh kippers. There were a selection of juices, cereals, fruit, and pastries also. Unfortunately, my cappuccino wasn’t the best but everything else was superb!
Our hotel room was lovely. It had a lovely view of Monaghan town. The bathroom was beautiful and we were supplied with some elemis products. The hotel supplied us a travel cot but luckily the bed was comfy and spacious enough as Oisín woke and decided he wanted to be in the middle! Well that’s the reality of parenthood!
The Lir Spa:
I received two complimentary treatments from their pick and mix offer. I chose a mini facial and back massage. My therapist Donna was amazing. She got the massage pressure just right and I think I might have drifted off to sleep. She then gave me a rejuvenating facial leaving my skin feeling refreshed. Donna was so kind and gave me lots of advice on my skincare routine.
After my treatments, I took full advantage of the thermal suite (Daddy day care/kids club!). The foot spas, tropical showers, hydrotherapy pool, sauna and steam rooms were heavenly. As a busy working Mammy taking time out for myself is a rarity so I lay in the relaxation room and soaked up the tranquil atmosphere until I realised it was almost check out time!
I would highly recommend this hotel for a family break away, a girly spa break or a chilled romantic getaway. Check out my Instagram takeover in the highlights section The hotel has lots of facilities and from what I can see online fantastic special offer deals. I will definitely book to stay again!
