First-time motherhood is literally like taking a step into the unknown.
You can never really prepare for it, no matter how many books you read or how many ante-natal classes you do. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been around babies all your life or if you’ve never changed a nappy, becoming a mum for the first time is the ultimate blank-page leveller.
There’s a great comfort in that though; knowing we’re all in this together and that it’s absolutely normal to feel like you haven’t a clue what you’re doing. We all find our feet eventually and as we get further along the journey, one of the biggest things that binds us together, is our birth story.
Sort of like our very own war stories, the experience of giving birth is life-changing in itself. The act is of course full of common threads and yet no two are quite the same. You go into that delivery room one person and come out another…
That’s what makes it so fascinating because each birth story is absolutely unique. Emotional, scary, unexpected, joyous, painful, surprising. Sometimes your labour is often filled with hilarious moments you never anticipated, worrying moments, blissful moments and even heart-breaking moments.
No matter what the outcome though, these are our war stories. We carry those battle scars inside and out like the badge of honour they are. Each of them a reminder that we did something truly extraordinary.
Sharing your birth story can be the ultimate bonding session with your friends. There’s nothing like sitting around comparing notes. It binds us together, allows us to celebrate each other and share just how truly amazing we are. By the same token, sharing your birth story can be a hugely cathartic process too. As incredible as giving birth is, it can often be filled with unexpected trauma or deep sadness and for many, there is often an undeniable healing power in sharing that with others.
So, with all that in mind, we’re starting a brand new BirthStories series on The M Word and we want YOU to take part.
The M Word is the award-winning platform where real mums come to read and share their stories. The real stories about motherhood, not experts preaching to you and in that vein, real life birth stories is the perfect fit.
